Lawyer Ben Aulich and accountant Michael Papandrea lose bid to challenge undercover police operation

 Canberra lawyer Ben Aulich and accountant Michael Papandrea have lost a bid in the ACT Magistrates Court to cross-examine police witnesses and challenge the undercover operation that led to their money laundering charges.

The pair are accused of conspiring with an undercover police officer to buy a supermarket or other company to help launder money from the sale of illegal cigarettes.

They are both charged with conspiracy to launder money, while Mr Aulich faces another charge of recruiting others to engage in criminal activity.

Today, the court heard an undercover police officer contacted Mr Aulich's legal office several times in May 2020 and organised to meet with him.

Nine-year-old hospitalised after falling from climbing wall at Flip Out in Canberra

 Canberra's WorkSafe watchdog has warned parents and carers to report any safety concerns at play centres after a boy fell off a rock-climbing structure last weekend. The child's mother, who asked to remain anonymous, said her nine-year-old fell at least 4.5 metres after he was disconnected from his safety harness at the Flip Out centre near Canberra Airport. The boy fell from what the centre calls its "clip and climb" structure, which WorkSafe ACT issued a prohibition notice to temporarily close after the incident. "I saw my son coming towards me with just blood everywhere, coming out all over his face and things," she said. Audit of ACT death certificates uncovers more COVID-19-related deaths in Canberra

 An audit of death certificates has revealed COVID-19 played a role in killing 61 more people in Canberra than previously thought. ACT Health has adjusted its official tally of COVID-19-related deaths to 224 since the beginning of the outbreak in 2020 — a 37 per cent increase. Chief Health Officer Kerryn Coleman said the under-reporting was the result of doctors submitting death certificates to the ACT registrar of births, deaths and marriages, but forgetting to report COVID-19-related deaths to ACT Health.
