 Canberra is known for its local shops, but is there an X factor for making them work?

Canberra is known for many things – its natural landscape, Parliament House, Floriade and of course roundabouts.

Another noticeable feature is the prevalence of local shops — many of the national capital's neighbourhoods are designed around them, and they provide services like grocers, hairdressers and butchers in a smaller setting.

In Weston Creek, for example, there are six sets of local shops servicing the area called home by over 20,000 people.

But as the territory becomes more centralised and bigger shopping centres open, local shops in the area have been forced to adapt or close.
