Australia floods: Thousands evacuated as downpours worsen

Image
Some 18,000 people have been evacuated from severe floods across New South Wales (NSW) in Australia, with more heavy rainfall predicted. The state's entire coast is now under a severe weather warning. Days of torrential downpours have caused rivers and dams to overflow around Sydney - the state capital - and in south-east Queensland. The military is being deployed to help with search and rescue, in what has been called a "one-in-50-years event". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-56476998

Santos gives green light to $4.7b new gas field off Australia

Santos, one of Australia’s largest oil and gas producers, has given the go-ahead to its $4.7 billion Barossa gas project north of Darwin after its plans were put on hold last year amid the coronavirus-driven market crash. The green light for the offshore gas and condensate project also kickstarts a $US600 million ($786 million) investment in the Darwin LNG plant’s life extension and pipeline projects, which will extend the facility life for around 20 years, the company said. https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/santos-gives-green-light-to-4-7b-new-gas-field-off-australia-20210330-p57f4e.html

"I spent 15 years removing cats from fenced reserves and national parks," says Katherine Moseby. "And then, all of a sudden, I was putting them back in. It felt very strange to be doing that." It is a hot, intensely blue day in the Australian outback, about 350 miles (560km) north of Adelaide. I'm tagging along with Moseby as she checks the batteries on the motion-sensitive cameras that dot Arid Recovery, an ecosystem restoration project she and her husband launched in 1997. The project sprawls over 47 square miles (12,200 hectares) of red earth and scrub. It's entirely surrounded by a six-foot-tall fence, which is designed to keep out feral cats and foxes.  https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210324-assisting-evolution-how-much-should-we-help-species-adapt
