HE AUSTRALIA–INDIA STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP: ACCELERATING SECURITY COOPERATION IN THE INDO–PACIFIC

Image
After five decades of testy or distant strategic relations, India and Australia began in the early 2000s to forge an increasingly cooperative defence and security partnership. The primary drivers were similar concerns about China’s rise, behaviour, and assertiveness, as well as converging views about the regional strategic landscape. The decreasing salience of their divergences — Cold War-era geopolitics, India’s nuclear status, strained people-to-people ties, and shallow economic and trade links — also helped create more favourable conditions. Starting slowly in 2000, and accelerating in 2006 and 2014, the Australia–India strategic relationship began to involve policy dialogues, military exercises, defence exchanges, and security arrangements of greater frequency and sophistication. China orders steel makers to stop buying Australian coal, say traders

Image
Sydney/Canberra | A top Chinese Customs official has warned authorities would strengthen the "import supervision" on Australian coal and other products in the latest sign that Beijing is using economic retaliation to pressure the Morrison government. Coal traders in China on Tuesday confirmed reports that China has told some of its state-owned steel makers and power plants to stop importing Australian coal, although it was unclear how damaging those instructions would be as many buyers had already hit their import quota limits. China reportedly orders halt to imports of Australian coal

China’s customs authorities have told several Chinese state-owned steelmakers and power plants to stop importing Australian coal, according to two industry newswire services. The move comes amid ongoing tensions in the relationship between China and Australia and reportedly affects both thermal and coking coal. The trade minister, Simon Birmingham, said the government was aware of the reports and was discussing the issue with Australia’s resources industry, which had “previously faced occasional disruptions to trade flows with China”. Australian federal budget found to be the most secretive ever produced

Image
The federal budget is the most secretive ever produced, hiding a series of expenditures from the public, including the amount taxpayers are spending to secure an offshore floating oil platform abandoned by a resources corporation in the Timor Sea, new analysis suggests. The Australia Institute on Friday released analysis of the frequency with which budget items were marked “not for publication”, a redaction commonly used where figures are classified, still under negotiation, or commercial in confidence. Australia's English test for partner visas could leave women at mercy of abusers, experts warn

Image
The federal government’s plan to force people seeking a partner visa to learn English could leave them without a safety net from family violence, critics have said, despite the Coalition’s claim that the measure is aimed at protecting women. The government announced in Tuesday’s budget that from late 2021 it would require partner visa applicants applying for permanency to have made “reasonable efforts” to learn English. The same test would apply to their permanent resident sponsors. How do you reconcile its meaning in your life with its egregious, potentially harmful nature? Tasmanian Devils Reintroduced to Australia after 3,000-Year Absence

Image
Tasmanian devils are back Down Under for the first time in thousands of years, thanks to a reintroduction project that released a group of the feisty marsupials in Barrington Tops, a protected national park about 200 kilometers north of Sydney. Eleven devils were freed Tuesday to roam mainland Australia; they are the first of their kind to do so in nearly 3,000 years. Their population was at least partially wiped out by dingoes, wild dogs that were introduced to the Outback at least 3,500 years ago. Ecologists say that a surge in the indigenous human population and a severe drought caused by a prolonged El Nino also contributed to their elimination from the mainland.
