High risk of coronavirus second wave as Australian shops and workplaces reopen, report says

Workplaces pose a high risk of triggering a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in Australia, which means people should continue to work from home as long as they can, a report from public policy thinktank the Grattan Institute says.

Published on Sunday evening, the report, Coming out of Covid-19 Lockdown: the Next Steps for Australian Health Care, says schools can safely remain open as long as policies are in place to reduce the risk of outbreaks.

It comes as Victoria announced it would extend its state of emergency for at least four more weeks and ramp up its police enforcement of lockdown rules after a spike in Covid-19 cases in recent days.

Canberra fire: Crews try to control Pierces Creek blaze after alert level reduced last night

The battle to control a bushfire burning in the Brindabella Ranges, west of Canberra, will continue on the ground and in the air today, after the alert level was downgraded from "watch and act" to "advice". A thunderstorm on Friday afternoon had minimal impact on the blaze, which had grown to 175 hectares by Saturday morning, with rain barely reaching the site. The fire started at Pierces Creek on Thursday night, moved fast towards Canberra on Friday, reaching eight kilometres away from the closest suburb of Kambah for most of the day. By 8:00am on Saturday it was seven kilometres from the suburb. Nine-year-old hospitalised after falling from climbing wall at Flip Out in Canberra

 Canberra's WorkSafe watchdog has warned parents and carers to report any safety concerns at play centres after a boy fell off a rock-climbing structure last weekend. The child's mother, who asked to remain anonymous, said her nine-year-old fell at least 4.5 metres after he was disconnected from his safety harness at the Flip Out centre near Canberra Airport. The boy fell from what the centre calls its "clip and climb" structure, which WorkSafe ACT issued a prohibition notice to temporarily close after the incident. "I saw my son coming towards me with just blood everywhere, coming out all over his face and things," she said.
