Government inquiry into Auslan access highlights disadvantages for Canberra's Deaf community

Kellyanne Rosalion and her seven-year-old daughter are both Deaf, but Ms Rosalion's husband and three-year-old are not. She describes her household as bilingual, practising both Auslan and English. NSW Premier to seek exceptional circumstances funding for flood-affected communities

Image
The New South Wales Premier will ask the prime minister for exceptional circumstances funding for flood-affected communities, as parts of the state face months of recovery amid more possible rain. Dominic Perrottet visited Moama on the Murray River in the state's south today, where water levels not seen in decades have forced hundreds from their homes. "I am continuing to work closely with the prime minister for further state and federal funding, which I expect to say more about shortly," Mr Perrottet said. Mr Perrottet said his government has already applied for 'Category C' clean-up and recovery grants, and on Friday would meet with Anthony Albanese to ask for 'Category D' assistance, which is for exceptional circumstances once the damage has been assessed. Outbreak of gastro at Canberra doughnut shop believed to be caused by sick worker and poor hand hygiene practices

Image
An ACT Health investigation has revealed a sick worker likely caused an outbreak of gastroenteritis (gastro) at a Canberra doughnut bar last year.  The investigation found the illness was caused by the spread of norovirus, a virus that often causes gastro and is spread through direct contact with an infected person or ingestion of faeces or vomit particles from an infected person. It found no reports of gastro symptoms from customers in the store, making it unlikely a sick patron was the cause of the outbreak, and also noted food handlers on site did not provide stool samples for testing.
