What Precautions to Take When Moving during a Pandemic?

Image
Recently I moved to my new home in Braddon, Canberra while the COVID-19 pandemic is wreaking havoc upon our lives. I have moved houses before but this time it was a lot more challenging and stressfully. This move taught me how important it was to remain safe and sanitise everything, which we neglect to do when moving under normal circumstances. Therefore, I wanted to share the things I learned by writting down precautions to take when moving during a pandemic for people who like me want to honour their lease agreements and plan to vacate their rented properly at the end of tenancy. Use New Packing Boxes and Supplies Under usual circumstances it is recommended that packing boxes and supplies are reused and recycled. However, when moving during a pandemic the opposite is wise because it limits exposure to the virus and helps stop the cycle of transmission. Therefore, it would be better to obtain new packing boxes and supplies for protecting your belongings during transit. M

A 46,000-Year-Old Aboriginal Site Was Just Deliberately Destroyed in Australia

Image
In the expansion of its iron ore mine in Western Pilbara, Rio Tinto blasted the Juukan Gorge 1 and 2 – Aboriginal rock shelters dating back 46,000 years. These sites had deep historical and cultural significance. The shelters are the only inland site in Australia showing human occupation continuing through the last Ice Age. The mining blast caused significant distress to the Puutu Kunti Kurrama traditional land owners. It's an irretrievable loss for future generations. Australia, you have unfinished business. It’s time to let our ‘fire people’ care for this land

Image
Since last summer’s bushfire crisis, there’s been a quantum shift in public awareness of Aboriginal fire management. It’s now more widely understood that Aboriginal people used landscape burning to sustain biodiversity and suppress large bushfires. The Morrison government’s bushfire royal commission, which began hearings this week, recognises the potential of incorporating Aboriginal knowledge into mainstream fire management. Its terms of reference seek to understand ways “the traditional land and fire management practices of Indigenous Australians could improve Australia’s resilience to natural disasters”. Rugby Resumes in Australia After Weeks of COVID-19 Lockdowns

SYDNEY - The first major sporting competition in Australia is restarting Thursday after weeks of COVID-19 lockdown. The National Rugby League (NRL) has adopted strict biosecurity measures and has developed a health check app for players. Australia’s National Rugby League season was suspended on March 23 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 16-team competition kicks-off again Thursday with a match in Brisbane. It is another sign that life in Australia, which has contained the outbreak, is beginning to resemble what it was before the coronavirus crisis. September start for Australia-NZ travel bubble 'realistic', Jacinda Ardern says

Image
Jacinda Ardern has given her strongest indication yet of when regular trans-Tasman travel may resume, listing September as a realistic time frame. Her comments echo those of an expert working group set up to lay the groundwork for the resumption of business-as-usual flights. However, the prime minister's deputy Winston Peters believes flights should be taking off from New Zealand to lesser-impacted regions of Australia - such as Tasmania and the Northern Territory - immediately. Australia's summer bushfire smoke killed 445 and put thousands in hospital, inquiry hears

Smoke from the Australian bushfires of the 2019-20 summer caused an estimated 445 deaths and put more than 4,000 people in hospital, a royal commission has heard. Eighty per cent of the Australian population was affected by smoke from the fires, which burned in six states across six months. Australian hydroxychloroquine trial to treat Covid-19 under review after WHO safety concern

Image
An Australian trial of two experimental drugs to treat Covid-19 is under review after the World Health Organization halted all its trials involving hydroxychloroquine due to concerns about its efficacy and safety. The board responsible for monitoring the safety of the trial was meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the future of the study. On Friday the Lancet published a study that found Covid-19 patients who received hydroxychloroquine were dying at higher rates and experiencing more heart-related complications than other virus patients. The large observational study analysed data from nearly 15,000 patients with Covid-19 who received the drug alone or in combination with antibiotics, comparing this data with 81,000 controls who did not receive the drug. Humans did not drive Australia's megafauna to extinction – climate change did

Image
When people first arrived in what is now Queensland, they would have found the land inhabited by massive animals including goannas six metres long and kangaroos twice as tall as a human. We have studied fossil bones of these animals for the past decade. Our findings, published in Nature Communications, shed new light on the mystery of what drove these ancient megafauna to extinction. Scott Morrison: How Australia's PM rebuilt his reputation

Image
It's exactly one year since he was re-elected. Online, there are TikToks of teenagers singing his praises. Shock jocks have apologised for previous criticism. It's in stark contrast to how he was viewed during the bushfire crisis, where he took a secret holiday to Hawaii while the nation was on fire. Mr Morrison's perceived failures sparked immense public anger. Citizens swore at him on camera, while firefighters and survivors refused to shake his hand. Then, as the blazes were dying down in late January, Australia found itself sucked into the coronavirus emergency. Read more:  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-52703265

This is where Australians can travel during coronavirus lockdown

Image
Over the past several weeks, Australia has successfully flattened the curve, making it one of just a handful of countries ready to start easing restrictions designed to stop the spread of coronavirus. But with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in a war of words over when state borders should reopen, it is clear not every leader is ready for life to return to some semblance of normal. All over the country, there have been strict quarantines enforced with few, if any, exemptions. Here's a rundown of what to expect in each state and territory.
